UNORGANIZED WASTE DISPOSAL

The main goal of SDG 12 is to ensure responsible and efficient consumption of resources and sustainable means of production.

I was born and raised in Malaysia for the last 21 years and i realized that actions must be taken to overcome the problem of unmanaged waste disposal. This problem is somehow overwhelming that I am concerned on how certain people don't even care about their surroundings and tend to turn a blind eye to the situation.

Waste disposal itself means recycling, removing or destroying unwanted material called waste that is produced from agriculture, domestic usage or industrial products.
Malaysia alone disposes more than 30,000 tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) every single day that equals to 1.17 kg per capita. The most significant component of MSW is food waste and followed by plastics, papers, and mixed organic.

I believe this problem stems from few major factors such as overconsumption and uncontrolled waste disposal. With the increasing population and growing economy, we tend to consume more products, resulting in more waste. Lack of education must be the other main reason why this problem occurs. Many people are not aware about the proper ways to dispose their waste and tend to litter and dispose house trash in roadways. They also are not aware of the impact that it has on the environment and the long term consequences.

These factors can have a significant impact on the environment as well as on  human health and welfare. To overcome the waste disposal, government can take several actions, including:
  1. Educating the public : Government can start by educating the public about the importance of reducing waste, recycling and proper waste disposal. This can be done through conducting public and school campaigns to raise the people's awareness the urgency of managing waste.
  2. Enforcing regulations: The government can also play a role in reducing unorganized waste disposal by enacting stricter regulations and enforcement. For example, the government could impose fines on bussinesses and individuals who do not properly dispose of their waste.
  3. Encouraging product design for sustainability: Government can incentivize manufacturers to design products that are more sustainable, durable and easy to recycle. This can help reduce the amount fo waste generated by products.
In conclusion, by commencing these provided solutions, our country can make an impact towards a more sustainable future with clean and comfortable environment.
